Case Study: Pool Deck & Backyard Makeover in Valley Center, San Diego
Project Overview
SD Premier Outdoor was hired to transform an outdated, poured-in-place concrete pool area into a relaxing, low-maintenance outdoor living space. The scope included a custom pergola, paver pool deck, artificial turf, a fully outfitted outdoor kitchen, and low-voltage landscape lighting—all designed to complement Valley Center’s natural surroundings.
Client’s Challenge
The homeowners faced a few persistent issues:

- Pooling water on aging concrete and a surface that looked and felt uncomfortable.

- An outdated concrete pool deck with no shade and limited space for gatherings.

- An “all rock, no grass” look that felt hot, stark, and uninviting, especially around the pool.
They wanted shade, comfort, and a beautiful space for everyday living and entertaining, without high upkeep.
Our Solution
We designed a cohesive outdoor environment that blends function and style. All hardscape was installed to CHMA guidelines for longevity and performance:

- Statement Pergola
A 2-post, extra-large, 4K extruded-aluminum pergola (aircraft-grade thickness) for maximum shade with a clean, modern profile. We integrated laser-cut, powder-coated aluminum privacy panels for filtered light and wind control, plus recessed lighting for evening use.

- Outdoor Kitchen
Built for serious hosting: warming drawer, refrigerator, built-in BBQ, access doors/drawers, and a sink—everything within easy reach. The counter features a large-format, 3D-printed porcelain surface with a quartzite look for durability and easy care.

- Pool Deck & Softscape
Over 3,500 sq ft of pavers (Belgard® Dimensions™ 12, Santa Monica color) create a cooler, non-slip surface underfoot. We softened the hardscape with over 2,000 sq ft of premium artificial turf to break up heat and add visual “green.”

- Lighting & Details
25+ low-voltage landscape lights highlight circulation paths, planting pockets, and architectural features for nighttime safety and ambiance.
